The most famous walking path in Scandinavia is hidden in Finnish-Lapland in the Oulanka National Park, which borders the Russian national park Paanajärvi to the east. In 1897 the special beauty of this region was recognized and the foundation of a national park was proposed, but it was not until 1956 that the park was ratified.
The main character of the national park is formed by the river Oulankajoki and our tour often follows its riverbanks. Rock formation and gorges carved out by erosion attract professional photographers from all over Europe … and obviously also many visitors.

Our tour crosses fascinating landscapes of Kuusamo, past canyons, rapids, mountains and native forest. Some small suspension bridges have to be crossed and sometimes the path is covered by small wooden planks (“Pitkospuu” in Finnish) to facilitate some difficult parts and also to protect the vulnerable ecosystem.

      

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1:   Arrive in Kuusamo

Transfer from the airport in Kuusamo to the hotel Kuusanko. Information meeting about the forthcoming trek. Group dinner.

Day 2:   Kuusamo-Salla - Taivalköngäs

The hike starts in Kuusamo-Salla to the first hut in Taivalköngäs, crossing a wild and rocky countryside.

Day 3:   Oulanka - Taivalköngäs - Kiutaköngäs

Opportunity for a detour hike to the Oulanka Canyon (wild rapids with suspension bridges). Afterwards proceeding from Taivalköngäs to Kiutaköngäs, where the visitor’s centre of Metsähallitus is situated (5 km). Open all year round.

Day 4:   Kiutaköngäs - Jussinkämppä

Only 1 km from the visitors centre a 600 m deep waterfall is reached and the river has a 14 m drop in a distance of 200 m!

Day 5:   Jussinkämppä - Jyrävä

One of the longest distances to cover on this tour. Enjoy the landscape and an evening in a hut on a lake.

Day 6:   Jyrävä - Juuma - Myllykoski-waterfalls

Visit the Myllikoski-waterfalls on our way from Jyräva to Juuma. One of the most splendid, free flowing waterfalls in Finland. In Juuma we return to the hotel Kuusanko. Sauna and dinner.

Day 7:   Return transfer to the airport in Kuusamo.

    

Tour Rating - moderate

Routes of easy to medium difficulty on good trails and paths. Daily distance up to 6 hours.A good level of fitness is required as you walk up to 17 km. carrying backpacks.

Note: Everything has to be carried by the participants (including food). Provision for max. 3 days has to be carried. Shopping facilities to buy meals for the remaining days exist enroute. Accommodation is partly in huts, partly in tents.
