Istria - Northern Pearl of the Adriatic
Hike and Cruise around Kvarner Bay
Istria - Northern Pearl of the Adriatic
8 Day Independent Tour
Discover the past of new Croatia step by step, as you enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate along the beautiful coastline of the Istrian Peninsula.
History lives on in this heart-shaped peninsula in the north of the Adriatic Sea, from the stone-age through Illyric, Greek, Romans, Germans, Slavic, Venetians, Austrians and Italians – each age and culture left its testimony over more than 7000 years of history. You name it, pre-Christian mound settlements, antique amphi theatres and temples, Byzantine mosaics, churches and sculptures from Romanic and Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and the Modern. Thus “diversity” is the common theme of Istria, which also shows in all other aspects of the region. Different characters of the landscape, mirroring the geological and climatic variety of the peninsula: quiet countryside and lonesome coast, flat plains and steep mountainsides, eradicated Karst and dense forests.
Istria is an exiting picture-book with huge contrasts in a small area, so bring your walking shoes and enjoy!
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Individual arrival at Rovinj or pick up at Trieste
Welcome and tour introduction by our local rep.
Day 2: Hiking to the Limski Canal, 19-23 km
You start the day with a boat trip on the famous Limski Canal. Afterwards you walk up to a little church, where you have an impressive view of the canal. Walk past lovely, carefully decorated villages and walk along the old railway track from Kanfanar to Rovinj. Discover vineyards, wild juniper and fields, protected by old stone walls. Far away you see the steeples of Rovinj, where the days hike ends.
Day 3: Rovinj – Barbariga, 22 km
You walk along the sea shore this morning, via rough as well as asphalt walking paths, along small campgrounds and bays. Slightly hilly, offering many possibilities for a swim, through olive groves and shady woods. Little inns along the wayside are waiting for you to refresh yourself.
Day 4: Barbariga – Fazana, 14.5 km
After a good breakfast you start today’s walk along the sea to Fazana. Every little piece of fertile ground is used for growing: wine, green peppers, olives, tomatoes being the most important crops. Not to forget plums as a basis for the local plum-schnapps named Sliwowitz. We visit Peroj a little Istrian village with idyllic fisher houses made from Karst stones. There we leave the coast and walk into the country to Vodnjan, a place said to be inhabited 30 to 40 thousand years ago. The church of Vodnjan houses 6 mummies with no scientist being able to tell why they are preserved in such a good condition. Further the church of Vodnjan houses over 370 relics from more than 250 different saints.
Day 5: Brijuni National Park
Fazana is a little fisher village situated between Vodnjan and Pula; it also serves as starting point for visits of the national park Brijuni. The village itself is very quiet, worth seeing is mainly the church Sv. Kosma with a famous picture of the Last Communion, painted by Z. Ventura (1578). The Bruijuni National Park consists of 14 islands and is home to an extraordinary variety of species. On the islands about 700 different species of flower and trees (laurel, rosemary, olives, pines, cedars, eucalyptus and bamboo) can be found. Declared a national park in 1983, it is also home of a safari park with zebras, lamas and deer. The visit takes 3 hours incl. the boat trip. The rest of the day is dedicated to relaxation.
Day 6: Fazana – Pula, 15.5 km
Today we follow the traces of the Romans to Pula. With 82.000 inhabitants Pula is not only the biggest city of Istria, but also the cultural, economical and unofficially political centre of the peninsula (official capital of the peninsula is Pazin). Nowadays Pula is a growing metropolis with large quays, suburbs, museums, theatres and a welcoming old town with many points of interest from the past.
Day 7: Hiking tour to Premantura,
A free day to do as you please. Swim in the sea or perhaps you would rather take a bicycle tour to Premantura – Kamenja, the southernmost point of Istria, about 35 km away. Discover the beautiful nature park Kamejak and refresh yourself in lonely bathing bays, have some Croatian specialities at the Robinson bar.

Hike and Cruise around Kvarner Bay
8 day Escorted Tour
1000 islands in crystal-clear water, rugged cliffs and countless little bays- that is the island-world of Croatia. Every island has its own distinct look, its own past, which is mirrored in the countless historical city ports.
You will spend one week getting to know the country and the locals of the islands of Cres, Krk, Rab and Losinj. You will set off in the morning with a good healthy breakfast. At midday you will meet up at the boat to receive a warm meal or you can enjoy a picnic outside in the fresh air. In the evening the motorised sailing boat will await you in the next port, and you will enjoy an excellent meal, before you head off for some shopping in the historical port city and finally lie down to sleep in your cabin or on deck under a thousand stars…
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1 (Sun) Omišalj – Opatija Riviera (2 h)
Individual arrival at Omišalj, a small harbour on the island of Krk. If you arrive by car we organise a supervised parking place. From 11 am you may move into your cabin on board the motor yacht. At 1 pm the boat will set sail for Lovran, where you will walk along a 12 km long shoreside promenade. Overnight stay in Opatija.
Day 2 (Mon) Northern Island of Cres - Krk (5 hrs)
Our motorised sailing boat will drop you off on the island of Cres. The planned hike will take you to Beli, one of the oldest castle settlements. The poetic pathway will take you through the island’s only “jungle”. After three hours you will reach a farm where griffons are raised. Here you will hear some interesting stories about these rare white-headed birds, which will be circling high above us. In the evening you will travel to Krk. This adventurous day will end with a guided tour of the historical centre of Krk.
Day 3 (Tue) Krk – Baska (3 hrs)
You will travel by boat from Krk to Stara Baska. Here you will undertake a three-hour hike on a pathway 300m above sea level, traversing the white cliffs of the Obzova Mountains to Baska. You will not miss out on seeing the glagolitical writing on Baska’s famous stone tablet. Baska is one of the prettiest towns in the Adriatic and lies in a fertile valley. After lunch you will travel by boat to the island of Rab, where you will spend the night in a quiet bay.
Day 4 (Wed) Rab Island (4 hrs)
First of all you will hike today through the so-called “Dundo Forest”. The pathway leads us past the St Euphemia monastery to an inviting swimming bay facing Rab island’s city towers. After a refreshing break you can discover the cute little historical streets of Rab. Afterwards the cook will be awaiting us with a warm meal. In the afternoon you will climb up to a view point on the 400m high Kamenjak Mountain and in the evening you will undertake a guided tour through the historic Old town of Rab.
Day 5 (Thurs) Lošinj Island (2 and 2 hrs)
On Thursday you will be taken to LošLinj Island. You will start your hike to the bay of Krivica from the old seamen- and health resort Mali Lošinj. In the afternoon you may like to take a walk along the shore to the small port of Veli Lošinj on the other side of the island. Overnight accommodation in the port of Mali Lošinj.
Day 6 (Fri) Lošinj Island (5 hrs)
In the morning you will take the local bus to Nerezine. From here the pilgrim’s path will take us up to the 588m high Televrina Mountain, the highest peak on the island. After a picnic with fantastic views across to the neighbouring islands, we will descend to the artist’s city of Osor, where the boat will be awaiting us in the old Roman canal. Overnight stay in Martiniscica.
Day 7 (Sat) Martinscica – Lubenice – Omisalj (4 hrs)
Today you will visit the particularly picturesque pirate’s cove of Lubenice, which lies up high on top of the cliff tops of Cres Island. The five-hour hike takes us from Martinscica up to the old stone village of Vidovici, which is situated on a high cliff with legendary panoramic views out onto the sea. The boat will await us on the Lubenice’s small beach and will take us to Omisalj, where we will spend our last night.
Day 8 (Sun) Omisalj (Disembarkment)
After breakfast guests will disembark until 9 am. |
Ship / Accommodation
MS Tarin
With its dark green painted trunk and white stripes the Tarin is in each port an eyecatcher. Finished at the beginning of 2004, it is the one of youngest ships in our fleet. The furnishings of the cabins attest to the care that captain Nevio put into the building of his ship.
The 23 meters long and 6 meters broad two masted ship has 11 cabins, of which 10 are above deck. Four cabins have a French bed (140 cm) and a single bunk. Two further cabins are equipped with just a double French bed (140 cm). The five remaining cabins have two bunks, which are arranged one above the other or next to each other. A cosy cabin is below deck. It has one small desk, separate beds and two portholes. Each cabin has a private shower/WC.
Tour Character
Light to average hikes ranging from 4 to 5 hours over mostly stony chalk/limestone ground. Hiking shoes/boots recommended. You should be fit enough for distances up to 15 km.
