High in the mountains over looking the lake and famous peaks of the region is the Eagles Nest, a unique breeding ground for these wonderful birds of prey. The mountains are very high, but there are beautiful passes to cross to the next valley. A very rewarding tour!

Your trails are running close to the edge of the mountain walls and you will have spectacular views. You will walk in low alpine areas and a good fitness and equipment is expected. CHIEMGAU ALPS OF BAVARIA & AUSTRIA
(Austria and Germany)
8 day escorted or independent tour
Nestling on the border between Salzburg, Tyrol and Bavaria are the Chiemgau Alps with soft mountains, large alpine pastures and famous holiday towns.
Scenic views to the ragged summits of the Alps contrasted by green rolling pastures of the foothills are part of the charm of this hiking tour.
Some of the most beautiful places certainly are mystical Lake Konigsee at the beginning and the Bavarian Lake Chiemsee at the end of the trip.
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Individual arrival at Lake Konigsee
Day 2: National Park Berchtesgaden (Lake Konigssee – Weißbach)
Comfortable walk past Lake Hintersee deep into the heart of the National Park. Scenic views as you walk, with ragged peaks of Reiter Alpe to the right and Hochkalterer Mountain on the left. On alpine pastures past the customs in Hirschbichl you walk down through gorge Seisenbergklamm into Saalach river valley.
Walking time about 5.5 hours.
Day 3: Gorges and Pilgrims (Weißbach – Lofer)
You walk in Saalach river valley to cave-system Lamprechtshöhle (longest water-coursed cave of Europe) and Vorderkaserklamm, with natural swimming pool. Continue the walk to St. Martin, where you can climb up to the pilgrim’s church “Maria im Kirchental”. The pilgrim’s church nestles in an idyllic side valley in the steep walls of Loferer Steinberge. Walking time about 4,5 hours.
Day 4: High-level walk on alpine pasture Loferer Alm to famous alpine pasture Winkelmoos Alm
A cable car gets you up to the alpine pasture Loferer Alm, where the high level path to Steinplatte starts. Today you can tackle the first summit. You walk across alpine pastures and lovely solitary mountain forests to the summit of Steinplatte. Walk down to Winkelmoos Alm, a large alpine pasture, and take the bus to Reit im Winkl. Walking time about 5.5 hours.
Day 5: Rest day in Reit im Winkl
Enjoy a rest day in well-known resort Reit im Winkl. Walking tip: One classic mountain tour, starting in Reit im Winkl is the summit of Fellhorn. The name hints at the ridge being free of forest and that it is covered by a “field” of meadows and alpine-roses.
Day 6: „The Eye of Chiemgau“ a poetic name for Lake Taubensee
Once you have seen this idyllic mountain lake, filling a hollow at 1138m altitude on the mountain Rauhe Nadel, you can understand the raptures of the name-giver. Anyhow the day is quite long, leading from alpine pasture to alpine pasture. Walking time about 5.5 hours.
Day 7: Kampenwand Wall in Chiemgau Alps
Up you hike through mountain forest to the alpine pastures of Hochplatte and Kampenwand. Enjoy stunning views over Lake Chiemsee. Follow the hiking path from alpine cabin to alpine cabin along the walls of Kampenwand. If you are sure-footed you can tackle the summit. Downhill you may take the comfortable cable car. Walking time about 5 hours.
Day 8: Individual departure
|
Tour Rating - Moderate
Routes of medium difficulty on good trails and paths. Daily walking distance up to 6 hours. Good fitness level is required for some parts as you walk up to 17 km per day. Good walking footwear is required.

PILGRIMS ROUTE OF ST. JAMES
(Austria and Germany)
8 day independent tour
This popular walking tour follows the famous thousand-year-old pilgrims path from boundary mark to boundary mark through the foothills of the Alps, as you walk on Salzburg’s Route of St James, past Rupert’s Winkl in Bavaria, and into the high mountains of the Alps. The former clerical state of Salzburg always welcomed pilgrims and treated them very well. Interesting ecclesiastical sites, charming countryside and impressive walks contribute to a relaxing and reviving walking tour.
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Individual arrival at Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee. Receive your pretour info pack, maps etc.
Day 2: By train to Oberhofen, then hike to Eugendorf
By train you reach the German border, where Salzburg’s St Jame's Route starts. First you walk past gentle green hills down to Lake Wallersee, then follow the lakeside trail to Eugendorf.
Day 3: Eugendorf – Salzburg
A comfortable walk brings you downhill into Salzburg, where a wealth of churches and ecclesiastical monuments wait to be discovered. A detour to Maria Plain, a baroque pilgrim church towering high over Salzburg, is worth the effort.
Day 4: Salzburg – Großgmain/Bad Reichenhall
This morning you walk across the city in the direction of Mt Untersberg. At the little town Großgmain you cross the German border to Rupert’s Winkl and afterwards you reach the Bavarian salt metropolis of Bad Reichenhall.

Day 6: Unken – Waidring/St. Ulrich
At first you follow the river Saalach into the widening valley around Lofer, which retains much of the original charm of a small alpine village. In front of you the steep rocks of the mountain range Loferer Steinberge seem to scrape the sky. You cross over the Strubpass into the province of Tyrol.
Day 7: Waidring/St. Ulrich – St. Johann
According to the route you walk on the dyke path to St. Johann or bypass past Lake Pillersee and St. Jacob’s church, to St. Johann in Tirol. This lovely ski resort town lies at the foot of the Kitzbuheler Horn.
