Tour de Provence

Fully escorted luxury tour - September 13 to 23, 2008

Provence combines an interesting mix of warm stone villages, Roman ruins, magnificent art, and history galore – and did we mention wine and French cuisine?

Based on the outskirts of a village at the foot of the Alpilles, in the heart of Provence between Arles and Avignon are two four-star Gites (country villa) we will call home. Both within easy biking distance of:

· Avignon - the papal city
· Arles - where van Gogh painted many of his most famous paintings. Also known for its well preserved Roman arena
· Les Baux de Provence - a huge medieval castle
· Pont du Gard - a perfectly preserved Roman Aqueduct

· St. Remy-de-Provence - a wonderful market town

· Glanum - an old Roman town

· Les Baux de Provence  - a huge medieval castle

· Camargue - known for its wild horses and pink flamingoes

We will not only be cycling. There will be an opportunity to drive to such places as Marseille and the French Riviera. You will not only visit Provence, you will experience it.

The second part of the tour will take us to Cassis with its spectacular Calanques, St. Cyr-sur-Mer and an opportunity to swim in the Mediterranean, and end the tour in Marseille, the port city settled by the Phoenicians and which recently celebrated its 2,600th anniversary.
