LA PLAGNE

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Purpose built ski resort, ideal for beginners and intermediates, with ski in/ski out convenience and some runs for advanced skiers. The various districts of La Grande Plagne: Plagne, Plagne-Village, Aime 2000 and Plagne Bellecote, are distributed over a plateau between Chambery and Aosta, surrounded by glaciers. The different areas are all linked by bus.

45 km of cross country skiing. Ice skating, swimming pool, hang gliding, tobogganing. Child minding service, cinema, discotheques, and hang gliding are available.

La Plagne has been linked with the Les Arcs ski area since the 2003/4 Season, resulting in a massive ski area to rival The 3 Valleys and Espace Killy - giving 240 pistes over 425km of skiing. Thus, in theory, with a 6 day lift pass, it is possible to ski 40 different runs each day without doing the same one twice!

VAL THORENS

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Sitting pretty at the head of the Belleville Valley is Val Thorens, at 2300 metres the highest ski resort in both the Three Valleys and Europe. On its own, the Belleville valley has 8 peaks above 3000m, 71 ski lifts, 10,000 skiable hectares comprising 330km of pistes, over half of that in the entire Three Valleys. It is a simply vast ski area with something for all levels, particularly when you also take into account the slopes of the Maurienne valley, the mysterious "Fourth Valley".

There has been huge investment in the resort over the last 10 years with another 40 million Euros scheduled to be invested before 2010 meaning exemplary lift infrastructure and state-of-the-art snowmaking facilities which enhance the excellent natural snow cover. The only problem comes in poor conditions; there are no trees anywhere to offer any relief from flat light.

Val Thorens offers all facilities for fitness training with indoor pool, whirl-pool, and gymnasium available for your use. Animation programe and numerous events. Many discos, bars, cafe's and a cinema are also handy. Showshoe walking and snowmobile trips may be arranged for non-skiers. Compulsory car/park (open and covered) 100 m before the village (extra - approx Euro50.00 per car per week). Private cars are only allowed to the apartments to load luggage. Bus service throughout the village.

MERIBEL

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Meribel is set right in the centre of the famous "Three Valleys" ski area which is renowned as one of the largest in the world. The village of Meribel (1450 m) is charming with lots of character. Meribel Mottaret (1800 m) is the satellite village above, built in the same Alpine style, and has a separate selection of shops and restaurants. Meribel Les Allues (1100 m) is 5 km below the village and is connected by cable car.

The "Three Valleys" ski area has over 600 kms of ski piste. 2 cable cars, 25 cable cabins, 46 chair lifts, 111 drag lifts. Best suited to intermediates and advanced skiers. Courchevel may be more chic and Val Thorens may have better snow but with Méribel it's all about location, location, location. Without its adjoining neighbours, the ski area is less impressive, but its position means that you can access the tops of the other resorts almost as quick as they can get there themselves.

The chalet style is a perfect example of how a resort should be purpose-built and the piste layout is similarly well conceived, groomed and constantly improved with 60 lifts and 600 snow guns in the Méribel valley alone.

Large ski school with English speaking ski instructors. 110 kms of cross country skiing. Ice skating, swimming pool, hang gliding.

In Meribel village: ice rink, heated swimming pool, squash, gym, sauna, steam bath, massage. Good selection of shops, restaurants, discos, & cinemas. Geneva is approx 136 km. away.

  COURCHEVEL

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Courchevel is the glamorous face of the Three Valleys, where pop stars with famous footballing husbands go to be photographed and the Paris jet set fly in on their private planes. This veneer of Parisian chic re-emphasises the French feel of the resort, in sharp contrast to the anglicised Méribel over the hill.
Aside from hobnobbing with the rich and famous, Courchevel also offers some wonderful tree-lined runs, great restaurants and a good range of terrain for all levels as well as a state-of-the-art lift system and access to the entire Three Valleys network. 60% of pistes are groomed every day and the primarily north-facing aspect of the resort means excellent snow conditions.

There are five main resort bases, including the slightly separate La Tania, of which Courchevel 1850 is the Big Daddy, both in terms of altitude and star quality. It is also by far the most expensive and the lower, more family-friendly resorts of 1650, 1550 and the old mountain village of Le Praz are much more affordable. The resort architecture lacks a little charm but the wooded runs that run through the resorts make up for it. The skiing is the most varied in the Three Valleys and skiers here are more prone to stay in their own valley, particularly as there are quite a few lifts involved if you want to get across as far as Val Thorens.

BRIDES-LES-BAINS

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Brides - Les - Bains has been a spa town since the 19th century and is now included in the 3 Vallees ski pass. Its 'real small town' feel contrasts with the internationally better known resorts up the mountain which include arguably France's choicest resort Courchevel, Europe's highest major resort Val Thorens, and Europe's ugliest resort - Les Menuires. Located just 10 minutes from Moutiers TGV station, it is connected to Meribel by a modern 6 passenger gondola (25 min. ride).

Brides Les Bains is a quaint village with 10 bars, 2 discos, a casino and thermal spring bath for your après-ski enjoyment. Accommodations at affordable prices and a wide range of alternative winter sports, including snow shoeing, ski hiking and bob sleighing, make Brides Les Baines an attractive destination.

VAL D’ISERE

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

In the valley of Tarantaise at the entrance of the Vanoise-National Park, 30 km from Bourg St. Maurice you'll find Val d'Isere. Formerly a small mountain village, today it is an internationally famous summer and winter holiday resort. Together with Tignes, Val d'Isere has a skiing area which is huge and varied, known as the "Espace Killy".

With more than 1000 hectares of the most varied marked ski runs imaginable, and a remarkable 10,000 hectares of off-piste, much of it is easily accessible from the lift system. It’s one of the most exhilarating ski areas in the world. Indeed, it is not difficult to make out a case for Val d’Isère and its neighbour being among a handful of the world’s finest ski resorts - some would even say the finest. Yet such high quality skiing comes at a price: Val is one of the more expensive places in the Alps for a winter holiday.
Access is via motorway up to Albertville, from there on the express street RN 90 to Moutiers (60 km), Bourg St. Maurice (30 km) and on the D 902 up to Val d'Isere. Railway station: TGV up to Bourg St. Maurice, from there on bus connection or a taxi. Parking, covered or uncovered is necessary at extra charge. Free parking in La Daille.

CHAMONIX

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

A famous small town with 10,000 inhabitants at the foot of the magnificent Mont Blanc, just 75 km from Geneva. Justifying its international reputation, Chamonix offers its visitors a large choice of entertainment and amusements; restaurants, bars, discotheques, cinemas, casino, indoor swimming-pools, riding, walking, and many shops.

Chamonix, together with the other resorts in the valley, is a wintersport centre of superlatives. Of the six ski areas in the Chamonix valley, Le Brevent and La Flégère are lift-linked, and the remaining four—Les Grands Montets, Le Tour, Les Houches and the off-piste skiing accessed from L’ Aiguille du Midi are linked only by road. For reasons of local political reasons Les Houches is not available on the main Cham'Ski lift pass and is consequently often overlooked—a shame because it offers some good tree-lined skiing.

Also offered are 50 km of cross country skiing, numerous ski hikes, toboggan run, ice skating, curling.

ALPE-D'HUEZ

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Alpe-d'Huez is one of France's best all-round resorts, with top-quality skiing for all and fine non-skiing facilities. It has some great tough runs (on and off piste) amid spectacular, high mountain scenery - with glacier skiing from 3300m. Lower down it has extensive intermediate and beginner terrain too.

The Dauphin of the Oisans Valley a nudge east of Grenoble, Alpe d'Huez is a purpose-built sprawling village set on a wide open flank of mainly south-facing mountainside. An ugly duckling hastily constructed for the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, it may yet turn into a swan as efforts are being made to reclad the amorphous buildings in sympathetic timber, and attractive chalet suburbs are being created on different flanks of the mountain.

In good conditions, there are few places to rival Alpe-d'Huez for the extent and variety of the skiing. With a modern efficient lift system, high altitude slopes mostly facing the sun, well maintained pistes with extensive snowmaking, good rustic mountain restaurants and accommodation very close to the slopes, put Alpe-d'Huez on your short list.

LES DEUX ALPES

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Les Deux Alpes is famous for its two distinct seasons: winter and summer. Both are alive with activity and great skiing, but for different reasons. Winter is fantastic for freeride skiing and the summer comes alive with a world famous boardpark on the glacier attracting freestyle skiers.

Whatever type of skier you are, Les Deux Alpes is a key destination for the ease of location and budget, slopes to challenge every level of skier, and the village’s friendliness and love of a good party. And since it is a glacial resort, Les Deux Alpes has an excellent snow record.

Nowhere else in the French Alps has such a variety of clubs, pubs, and après-ski fun. Every night is a good night out. And this rings true for singles, couples, friends, and families alike.

It takes only 20 minutes to walk from one side of town to the other, so you are never far from the nearest lift or your hotel. And if you don’t feel like walking, just take one of the free buses circling the town. Les Deux Alpes is easy to get around, and better yet, nothing you need or want is too far away.
