DOLOMITES TO LAKE GARDA
7 day Independent Tour
This gorgeous tour starts on the foot of the ragged peaks of the Dolomites, at the highest point of Pustertal valley. We cycle downhill along the rivers Rienz, Eisack and Adige on beautiful, sometimes completely new cycle paths to Rovereto. Here you swap to the north bank of Lake Garda, in the Italian Lakes district.
Some cities preserve the typical Tyrolean style with arcades, while in Trentino the Tyrolean style is mixed with Italian influence. Monasteries, domes and fortresses dot the landscape.
Visit the oldest Tyrolean, Ötzi – the ice mummy – in the museum of Bolzano.
Lake Garda provides a stunning backdrop, as well as many restful activities after this easy cycle tour.
Day to day Itinerary
Day 1: Brixen
Arrive in the lovely alpine town of Brixen. Balance of the day is free to explore. Meet your guide this evening.
Day 2: – Brixen to Brixen, approx. 65 km
Transfer from Brixen into the Pustertal valley to Bruneck or Toblach. Following the River Rienz downhill, past Olanger reservoir to Bruneck (local history museum).
Comfortable cycling into the lower Pustertal valley through Mühlbacher Klauser gorge into Eisack valley, back to Brixen.
Day 3: Brixen – Bolzano approx. 40 km
Through the town of Klausen along the River Eisack to Waidbruck (great views of fortress Trostburg). Here the valley narrows and mouths into the Bolzano valley. This city is a meeting place of two cultures (visit the archaeological museum with Ötzi, the ice-mummy).
|
 |
Day 4: Bolzano – Kaltern/Auer/Salurn approx. 25-50 km
There are two options to get to Lake Kalterer See: an undulating option on the new cycle path via Eppan and St. Pauls (dome in the country) or on the dyke of the River Adige to Auer and from there to Lake Kalterer See, or farther to the southernmost German-speaking town of South Tyrol: Salurn.
Day 5: Kaltern/Auer/Salurn – Trient approx. 50-30 km
From Lake Kalterer See or Salurn you return to the cycle path on the dyke of the Adige. At Salurner Klause the German speaking Sud-Tirol ends. The cycle path crosses the famous Trentian wine-growing area to reach the ancient Bishop’s seat of Trento (old town, dome, castle Buonconsiglio).
Day 6: Trento – Riva/ Lake Garda North approx. 45 km
Shortly after the old Tyrolean city Rovereto we leave the Adige valley. The only climb worth mentioning (approx. 150 m) near Mori is followed by a lovely descent to Torbole on Lake Garda. We end our tour in Riva or Torbole.
7th day: Depart this morning, or extend your stay on beautiful Lake Garda.
Transfers
The nearest airports are Bolzano, Innsbruck and Verona, in that order. Regular train service is available from each airport to Toblach, where your tour starts.

Tuscany has a dreamlike but also hilly landscape dotted with steeper inclines, but not overwhelmingly so. Average daily distance is about 40 kilometres. Though the daily routes are not too long, they can be strenuous, so we do recommend being in reasonably good physical condition for this tour.
For those not so fit, our electro bike is a popular option!

After the visit cycle back to Caltagirone.
Day 3: Caltagirone–Modica (47 km + 40 km by train)
From Caltagirone you cycle southward until you reach Vittoria where you take a train to Modica. The upper town is watched over by the magnificent 18th century façade of the church of San Giorgio.

Before leaving Modica, one should at least try the famous spicy chocolate. From Modica you will gradually descend alongside the caves characteristic of the Iblei mountains, to Scicli, totally rebuilt in the Baroque style after the earthquake of 1693. Continue onwards through the marine centre of Pozzallo.
Day 5: Pozzallo–Marzamemi (48 km).
This day of cycling on an almost completely flat course will bring you through Portopalo di Capo Passero, continental Europe’s southernmost point. Before arriving to Marzamemi, the beautiful island of Correnti marks where the Ionian and Mediterranean seas meet.
6th day: Marzamemi–Noto (35 km).
The route takes a turn to the north passing through the relatively untouched and pristine natural preserve of Vendicari, where you can relish the beauty of the countryside. The trip continues north, ending the day at the city of Noto, considered to be the finest baroque town in Sicily. Completely devastated in the earthquake of 1693 the city was rebuilt in the style of the day with beautiful honey-coloured stone buildings with ornate churches and monuments surrounding attractive piazzas.
Day 7: Noto–Siracusa (35 km).
Heading north, the route continues towards Siracusa , the capital of Ancient Greece and home to Archimedes. With the Island of Ortigia in the background, the centre of Siracusa is a wonderful display of an ancient city that has endured the presence of various Mediterranean civilizations and accumulated the wealth and culture of their passing for over 3,000 years. The island of Ortigia joined to the mainland of Siracusa by two bridges, is a fascinating web of ancient buildings and narrow streets with two main piazzas buzzing with an assortment of bars and cafes.

CYCLE & CRUISE IN NORTHERN ITALY
8 Day Semi-Escorted Bike & Barge Tour
New for 2009 is our bike and barge tour along the Po River and its canal system to the magical city of Venice. We cycle through unspoilt rural Italian countryside , ending in the warm embrace of the Venetian lagoon. This
territory has been reclaimed from the marshes for
many centuries now and is framed by
green pine-woods, which offer protection
for numerous species of animals.
Our very comfortable Dutch barge is the perfect floating hotel for this flat and inviting cycle route.
DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival in Mantova
Bicycles are available
from 11a.m. at the boat, which is moored
at Porto Catena, just a short walk from
the centre.
Day 2 Mantova–Castelguglielmo (38km)
The boat takes us to Governolo, stronghold
of the Mincio Pirates: here, you
take your bikes and start our ride. We
cycle towards San Benedetto Po, home
of an ancient monastery. We continue
following the Po River as far as Revere, summer
residence of the Gonzaga dynasty.
The last stretch of road brings us to
the harbour of Ostiglia on the Fissero/
Bianco canal, where you reboard the boat.
A short stretch of navigation brings us to
Castelguglielmo, where you will moor for
the night (overnight in Revere if the level
of the Po is suitable).
Day 3 Castelguglielmo–Ferrara–Adria
(55km)
Departure for Ferrara: the historic
centre is still surrounded by the
old city walls. The great number of cycle
paths and the widespread use of bikes
have earned Ferrara the name of “the
city of bicycles”. At the end of the day,
on board Vita Pugna, you reach Adria:
the pearl of the Polesine, an ancient
Greek port, famous for trading amber
coming from the Baltic, which gave its
name to the sea it faced (overnight in
Ferrara if the level of the Po is suitable).
Day 4 Adria–Porto Levante (48km)
We go deep into the maze of the Delta,
an uncontaminated paradise between the
marshes and lagoons of the Po, pedalling
in the heart of nature. The destination
today is Porto Levante, a small marine
village of ancient traditions.
Day 5 Porto Levante–Chioggia (34km)
Vita Pugna leaves us on the other bank
of the Po di Levante. We are approaching
Albarella, suspended between water
and land, as you pedal between the Delta
and the mouth of the River Adige. From
Cavanella d’Adige, the farthermost border
between the provinces of Rovigo and
Venice, you then follow the Po-Brondolo
Waterway, which links the river to the
Venetian lagoon. We will stay overnight
in “Little Venice” and a visit to the fish
market at dawn is an absolute ‘must’.
Day 6 Chioggia–Venice (28km)
Vita Pugna brings us to the Oasis of
Ca’ Roman, a sandy islet surrounded by
pine-woods. Pedalling along the lagoon,
you reach Pellestrina: from here, you ride
on the new cycle path as far as the ferry
landing stage. A short boat ride takes us
back up the Lido, along the ‘Murazzi’,
with a stop in Malamocco, the ancient
harbour. Overnight in the Venetian lagoon.
Day 7 Venice - Brenta Canal - Venice (38km)
Optional touring day today where you may visit Venice, or cycle to some of the reknown Palladian Villa's surrounding the city.
Day 8 Venice
After breakfast, with a
view of the lagoon and the customary
goodbyes, free time for individual visits to
Venice, or return home.
NAVIGATION ON RIVERS AND CANALS
In low-water periods, the River Po is navigable only from
the estuary to Polesella. It is for this reason that our
programme has been planned to feature navigation along
the Fissero/Bianco canal, which runs parallel to the Po.

SARDINIA
8 day Independent OR Escorted Tour
Sardinia is the jewel of the Mediterranean Sea, stunningly beautiful and unspoilt. You will never feel crowded on Sardinia, one of the least densely populated regions of Europe. A chance to enjoying an unspoilt country, turquoise sea and marvellous beaches far away from crowds.
All islands have a peculiar fascination, and Sardinia is no exception. Lying a little less than 200km from the Italian mainland and at the same distance from the Tunisian coast, it is in the words of D.H. Lawrence, “lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere”.
With its own language and distinct customs, the island boasts a fiercely independent character while remaining unmistakably and exuberantly Italian. Get close to the last free roaming wild horses of Europe as you cycle along the southwestern coastal region. Breathtaking views guaranteed!

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to San Salvatore Sinis
Welcome meeting with tour information and collection of rental bicycles.
Day 2: San Salvatore Sinis – San Salvatore Sinis, approx. 52 km
An easy first day, cycling the flat coastal plains of the Sinis wetlands. The salt ponds around the gulf are home to thousands of pink flamingo in season and a wealth of other birdlife, and you may see locals fishing for mullet or bass from traditional grass fassone boats. Circling the lake to Riola Sardo you return to the coast at Mari Ermi, and the spectacular white quartz beach of Is Arutas. A short trip down the peninsula to San Giovanni Sinis brings you to the Phoenician ruins of Tharros, with a history of inhabitation stretching back almost 2,500 years. Wine production here is mainly sherry-like vernaccia, and you may be able to visit a cellar on the way.
Day 3: San Salvatore Sinis – Arbus approx. 46-53 km
To avoid the boring suburbs of Oristano we transfer by road to Arborea, to cycle to Piscinas, on the Costa Verde. It is a flat 8 miles across reclaimed farmland to the colourful fishing village of Marceddì. Rice, soft fruit and vegetables are grown for the cucinas of Sardinia. From Marceddì it becomes more undulating, with low hills and huge sand dunes skirting the coast.
Day 4: Arbus – Nebida approx. 49 km
The toughest day, but some glorious scenery to compensate! You start by flying down hill (but uphill sections also!) from Arbus to the river Mannu, and the start of the miles of golden beaches of Portixeddu. To the left is the massif of Monte Linas, with the Costa Verde and erica covered sand dunes away on your right. After the unfortunately named mining town of Buggerru and the Pranu Sartu plateau is the charming Cala Domestica bay. Inland, the Marganai mountain group rises to almost 3,500 feet. After the 400 foot limestone cliffs of Pan di Zucchero, you arrive to Nebida, another old mining hamlet.
Day 5: Nebida – Calasetta, approx. 43 km
A beautiful descent to Fontanamare followed by an undulating coastal ride to Portoscuso. Here, board the local ferry to Carloforte on Isola di San Pietro. There is time for a short itinerary around the island, exploring sandy coves and dramatic rocky headlands, tiny hamlets before rejoining the ferry to continue to equally unspoilt Sant' Antioco. Note that it is not possible to book the ferry in advance, and you will need to pay on arrival.
Day 6: Calasetta – S. Anna Arresi approx. 43 km
A morning to laze by the pool or explore the coast nearby, or for a short cycle ride around the island with its wealth of coves and beaches, green meadows (or golden in the summer) and little villages. After a visit to Sant’Antioco, cross back to the mainland, to visit the Pisan sanctuary at Tratalias - one of the most important monuments from the Romanesque period. From here you follow the shoreline of lake Monte Pranu and through the rolling plains of Sulcis. Once again, rugged mountains rise up to your left, to around 4,000 ft. Just before the village of Sant' Anna Arresi you reach your hotel, well sited overlooking the emerald green waters of the Golfo di Palmas. Nearby are the bright white beaches of Porto Pino, backed by dunes and Aleppo pine woods.
Day 7: S.Anna Arresi – Pula, approx. 60 km
The longest day by distance, but gentle countryside across the rugged coastal plains of the Costa del Sud. This is a remote, wild and beautiful region of Mediterranean bush and coastal pools, gleaming white beaches and imposing cliffs. Cape Malfatano and Cala Piscinnì each boast a 16th C tower, while at Capo Teulada the spectacular cliffs rise more than 700 feet from a translucent sea. A short detour will take you to the beautiful beach of Su Giudeu in Chia, while at Pula is the important Phoenician city of Nora. Your last night is at the luxurious oasis of i Giardini di Alice, once a thoroughbred farm and now a lovely hotel complex in its own 25 acre park.
Day 8: Departure Day
After breakfast the tour is completed. You may depart or choose to extend your stay.
|
RATING: Moderate to Difficult
The route covers the savage and remote south west corner of Sardinia, far removed from the busy playboy resorts of the north east. The terrain is rugged in parts, with high cliffs ascending from the coast, interspersed with long sandy beaches, grass-covered dunes - and breathtaking views. Two days are quite hard and hilly cycling. The prevailing wind blows from the north west - which is also our direction, though it is unlikely it will always be at your back.
Suitable for experienced cyclists with a very good level of fitness.
Transfers
The nearest airport is Cagliari. Transfers (minimum 2 persons): Cagliari – San Salvatore Sinis € 50 per person ; Pula – Cagliari € 30 per person. Pula - San Salvatore Sinis € 55 per person. Reservations are required!
