LAKE CONSTANCE - 4 Countries, 1 Lake!

8 day Independent Tour

It is difficult to find another European cycle route as popular as Lake Constance! Three countries share this large lake in the heart of Europe: Austria, Germany and Switzerland, each adding its own special flair.

To mention a few of the art treasures encountered: the cultural heritage Island Rei-chenau, baroque style pilgrim church Birnau, or the historic old town of Stein on Rhine. Add the marvellous countryside along the lake, a cycle path winding its way through idyllic meadows, along glittering water, and in front of the stunning peaks of the Alps.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1:   Arrival at Constance

Enjoy a stroll through the very well maintained old town of Constance, with Town Hall, the Munster, and the maze of little alleyways of Niederburg. Not to forget the Mediterranean harbour with its famous “Imperia”. Overnight in Constance.

Along the lake you cycle through small Swiss fishing villages with beautiful half timbered houses. Via Constance you cycle to flower island Mainaut. By boat from Wallhausen into the old Emperor’s residence Überlingen. Overnight in/near Überlingen.

Day 4:   Überlingen – Birnau – Meersburg – Friedrichshafen approx. 40 km

THE RHINE AND NECKAR BY BARGE & BIKE

8 Day Escorted Tour

You will have the chance to enjoy the most beautiful part of the Rhine between Koblenz and Rüdesheim from the sundeck. Let the castles and fortresses float by! The Rhine bike trail passes well-known and worthwhile places such as Eltville, the historical Mainz and the Nibelungen town Worms. But the Neckar has a lot to offer as well. You will start to discover it in a town of worldwide fame: Heidelberg. Marvel at the Old-town which is well worth seeing and visit the magnificent castle. The romantic atmosphere of the Neckar will be experienced next! Take your time to enjoy Neckarsteinach as well as the small town Hirschhorn with its former Carmelite monastery. Loaf around the angular lanes of Eberbach and bike to Hornberg castle. Another highlight is the visit of Marbach, Schiller’s birthplace, with its picturesque fountains and ancient half-timbered houses. Anyone with a weakness for castles and baroque gardens will be rewarded in Ludwigsburg, the last stage of your trip.

This tour is also offered in the opposite sense from Ludwigsburg to Koblenz.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arriving in Koblenz

Individual arrival at the ship in Koblenz Harbour. The crew welcomes you on board. Experiencing the Old-town on your own is recommended. Embarkment starts at 4 p.m.

Day 2: Mainz - 35 km

During the morning, the ship will take you up the Rhine in order to reach the world-famous town of Rüdesheim around noon. After a lunch break you will finally get on the bikes. The ferry will take you to the other side of the river to allow you a tour around Bingen. Then, after a short break, you will continue on your bikes into the centre of Mainz on the right side of the Rhine. Look forward to a tour around the town in the late afternoon. There, you might take the chance to visit one of the many interesting museums.

Day 3: Worms - 45 km

Heading southwards! From Mainz to Oppenheim. For a while you will stay right by the side of the Rhine, then you will observe the mighty river from a distance. You will rejoin the ship in Worms with its cathedral and Nibelungen gate. Along with the cathedrals of Mainz and Speyer, the cathedral of Worms is one of the greatest creations of Romanic church architecture. Not only tourists come to Worms for a visit, but also the inhabitants of the town love to stroll along the remodeled and restructured Rhine promenade. It is a pleisure to walk from "Strandbar 443" and the "Rheincafe Fürst" past the park to the boathouse "Hagenbräu" and "Kolb`s Biergarten". Marvel at the great variety of exotic plants, almost bringing a Mediterranean flair to the Rhine promenade of Worms.

Day 4: Heidelberg - 25 km

Departing from Worms, you will easily reach Ladenburg and its wonderful half-timbered houses. Here you will say goodbye to the Rhine and get acquainted with the Neckar. Just a short distance along the Neckar to cycle and you will find yourself in the heart of beautiful Heidelberg, where the ship is already waiting for you. In the late afternoon, a walk around Heidelberg is scheduled; we highly recommend a visit to the castle.

Day 5: Eberbach - 35 km

Leaving Heidelberg, your nect destination will be Neckargemünd. On your way you will also pass Ziegelhausen. The route we have chosen leads through the southern Odenwald to Neckarsteinach. You can now look forward to the next stage, the small town Hirschhorn and its castle. This town is considered the treasure of the Neckar valley. The most worthwhile sights are Hirschhorn castle, the ancient Carmelite monastery and the market church. Finally, you will bike to Eberbach, today’s final destination. Enjoy a walk around the narrow streets and the small places supplying a lively atmonsphere.

Day 6: Heilbronn - 35 km

Ready, steady, go! After breakfast you will have the energy to bike to Neckarzimmern. A short trip to Hornberg Castle will be very interesting. This castle is one of the most beautiful ones in the Neckar valley. It used to be the domicile for the bishops of Speyer after 1259 and came into possession of Berlichingen in the 16th century. Next, a transfer to Heilbronn by boat is scheduled.

Day 7: Ludwigsburg - 35 km

A short boattrip to Besigheim starts this magnificent biking day. Look forward to a short tour around Besigheim before continuing to Marbach by bike. You should definitely not miss this lovely small town with its neat half-timbered houses. Marbach is not only the place where Schiller was born, but above all a rural small town with picturesque corners, narrow streets, steps and fountains. Full of new impressions, your bike trip continues on the right side of the Neckar to reach the landing stage Hoheneck in Ludwigsburg in the afternoon. Here you will be spoilt for choice: Stay on board, or make another short excursion to Ludwigsburg. A medium incline has to be mastered first, before rolling down into town. But the effort will of course be recompensed: particularly those enthusiastic about castles and baroque gardens will get their money worth.

Day 8: Departing from Ludwigsburg

After breakfast it will be time to say goodbye. The train takes you back to Koblenz in about 3 hours or in about 12 minutes to Stuttgart central station, where you have access to ICE trains in all directions.
