8 Day Escorted or Independent Tour

Our Safari starts and finishes in Galway city, Ireland’s liveliest city with cobbled streets of entertainers and pubs spilling over with merriment with the wonderful backdrop of Galway Bay. The cycling starts from the village of Cong made famous by the film “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

Our route takes in the best of the area including the colourful town of Westport, the pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, the stunning Delphi Valley, Killary Harbour, Kylemore Abbey, Clifden and the famous Sky Road.

However for many it is the lesser known sections of this route that are the real draw as we ride across spectacular open bogland, pass deserted beaches and opt for the charming seaside village of Roundstone for our rest day. If this were not enough we take a ferry over to the Aran Islands to give an insight into this unique way of lift and to visit the dramatic hill fort of Dun Aengus. New this year is the overnight stay on the Island!

We run both guided & self guided tours in Connemara for you to choose from.

Character - moderate

The roads are all sealed and the route is designed to ensure that you spend most of the week on quiet back roads, away from the main tourist routes.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY

Day 1:   Galway City

Meet with the guide at 6.30pm in the bar of Jury’s Galway Inn Hotel in the centre of Galway city. Galway is a very historical city with a great atmosphere so you can spend the afternoon pottering around the many shops in the old town or calling into one of the many pubs to listen to some traditional music.

After dinner and an introductory chat from the guide we take a coach transfer to the village of Clonbur which lies on the peninsula between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, on the Galway/Mayo border. Once settled into our accommodation there is a chance to enjoy a drink and some traditional Irish music.

Day 2:   Clonbur – Westport (approx. 60 km)

Once fitted out with bikes, we head north along the quiet backroads through rolling green fields full of grazing sheep, before descending down to Lough Mask and a wonderful cycle along the shores of the lake. After lunch we have our biggest climb of the week over the Partry Mountains and then cycle along a quiet back road with stunning views of the surrounding landscape all the way to colourful village of Westport.

Day 3:   Westport – Leenane (approx. 50 km)

We cycle between Croagh Patrick and the beautiful Clew Bay with its many small islands, to the village of Louisburgh where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we head south through one of the highlights of the week, the stunning Delphi Valley with its beautiful lakes overlooked by Ben Bury the highest mountain in Connemara. That night we stay in the small village of Leenane which looks out over Killary Harbour, Irelands only fjord.

Day 4:   Leenane – Roundstone (approx. 70 km)

We cycle into the heart of Connemara, overlooked by the Twelve Bens mountain range and visit Kylemore Abbey, a wedding gift from a wealthy Liverpool businessman to his wife in 1868.
We then cycle along quiet back roads past small fields with grazing cattle to the seaside village of Cleggan where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we follow the scenic coast road to Clifden where you can watch cars travel across the beach to Omey Island only accessible when the tide is out! After a stop off in Clifden the capital of Connemara , we cycle along a quiet country bog road surrounded by small lakes and freshly cut peat with wonderful views of the Twelve Ben mountain range . That night we stay in the picturesque fishing village of Roundstone where we will spend the next two nights.

Day 5:   Rest day in Roundstone

The day can be spent in rest and relaxation or you can take part in a variety of activities including a day sailing cruise, walking, a game of golf or horse riding. You can also spend the day just relaxing on one of the two beautiful white sandy beaches just outside the village, overlooking a clear blue sea.

6th day:   Roundstone – Aran Islands (approx. 50 km)

We cycle along beautiful waterways and another picturesque bog road with its freshly cut peat waiting to be harvested, both offering wonderful views of the surrounding countryside before cycling the final afternoon stretch to the ferry in Rossaveel which will bring us to Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands where we will spend the night..

7th day:   Aran Island/Galway  (approx. 35 km)

The day can then be spent touring the unique landscape of the island with its wealth of ancient stone forts and monastic sights. WEST CORK & KERRY

8 Day Escorted or Independent Tour

This tour covers some of the most spectacular scenery that Ireland has to offer.  Shortly after leaving Killarney you will find yourself cycling between the majestic lakes that have made this area so famous to be shortly followed by a climb up to Molls gap with its wonderful views of the Macgillycuddyreeks, Ireland’s highest mountain range. The rest of the week involves more of the same stunning scenery with a wonderful coastal cycle along Kenmare Bay and the twisted mountains of the Beara Peninsula. This summer we are staying on the beautiful Beara Peninsula for our rest day in Castletownbere . Towards the end of the week we head inland and stay at a beautiful Lakeside retreat of Gougane Barra at the source of the River Lee. On the final day we cycle up over the wild and isolated hills of the Coolea region before returning to Killarney.

Day to Day Itinerary

Saturday: Arrive in Killarney

Meet in the centre of Killarney with the tour guide and the rest of the group.

Sunday: Killarney to Kenmare     37 km

We set out on a cycle lane, which winds through Muckross National Park. In the afternoon, the road climbs in the shadow of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, before we freewheel down to the coastal village of Kenmare, where we stay the night.

Monday: Kenmare to Castletownbere   63km

You follow a spectacular coast road hugging Kenmare Bay with its wonderful views of the MacGillikuddy
Reeks Mountains, before stopping for lunch at a small pub overlooking the bay. In the afternoon you can visit
the nearby Dereen Gardens with its amazing variety of flora. Leaving the Gardens you cycle west where you
can visit an ancient stone circle or explore the beautiful scenery and quiet back roads of the Beara Way.
Castletownbere, where you will spend the next two nights, is nestled at the foot of the Cahas Mountains and is Ireland’s largest white fish port.

Tuesday: C’Bere/Eyeries/Allihies/C’Bere    40km

Today’s cycle is a circular route, taking in the Beara Peninsula, one of the week’s highlights, with its twisted
mountainscapes and breathtaking coastal scenery. You begin by retracing your route to Eyeries; from here, to
your lunch-stop in Allihies, you can really feel you are away from it all, experiencing an undiscovered part of
Ireland well away from some of the bustling tourist routes. After lunch you continue cycling around the
peninsula with more wonderful views of the ocean. You have the option of detouring off the main route for a
scenic bike ride to the crossing point for Dursey Island, which can be reached by catching a ride on the only
cable car in Ireland. After this interesting detour you return back to the main road and continue on towards
Castletownbere, passing the entrance for Dunboy Castle, which is well worth a visit.

Wednesday: Castletownbere to Glengarriff   35km

Today’s cycle is along the shores of Bantry Bay, one of the deepest natural harbours in Europe. Glengariff,
meaning “Rugged Glen” occupies a beautifully sheltered position, surrounded by mountains which, together
with its mild climate, permits a variety of luxuriant plants to grow. Located just outside Glengarriff is Garnish
Island, which was transformed between 1910 and 1913 from a bare limestone rock into a luxuriant garden
island, known worldwide for its huge selection of plants and its Italian Garden full of exotic plants. A local
regular ferry service provides a non-stop ferry service to the island, as well as water tours of Glengariff
Harbour.

WEST CORK COASTLINE

8 Day Escorted or Independent Tour

Our starting point is Cork City on the banks for the river Lee. It is the river that provides our inspiration as we begin our journey following backroads along its course to the wonderful glacial lake and hermitage retreat of Gougane Barra.

The fresh salty air of the Atlantic Ocean is our next inspiration as we sweep down towards Bantry Bay and take in the wonderfully remote and unspoilt charms of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula.

We hug the coastline for the rest of the week taking in the charming villages of Baltimore, Union Hall and Glandore, with the nearby Neolithic stone circle of Drombeg.

The towns of Clonakilty and Kinsale await where the brightly coloured villages compete with each other for your attention, all this connected by sweet scented fushia-lined backroads.
The group tour finishes up in Kinsale, whereas the self gided tour heads back to Cork city for the last night.

Character- Moderate

The roads are all sealed and the route is designed to ensure that you spend most of the week on quiet back roads, away from the main tourist routes.

A shorter version of this tour is available using easier routes, thus ideal for novice cyclists and families.

WILD WEST MAYO

8 Day Escorted or Independent tour

Our Safari starts and finishes in the colourful town of Westport. We set off on our cycle around Lough Conn where fisherman cast off and patiently wait for the days catch.

As a field structure of over five and a half millennia, it is the oldest known field system in the world.
We continue our journey cycling along the Atlantic Coast to Ireland’s largest island Achill, where we are basing ourselves for two days. Achill is unspoilt by the havoc of the modern day and many of its beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status by the European Union.
Dramatic views of towering cliffs, majestic mountains and open moorland - nature at is most beautiful, all immortalized by the paintings of Paul Henry.

THE ANTRIM COAST

8 Day Escorted or Independent tour

Our meeting point is Belfast, a changing city undergoing large-scale transformation of the centre and waterfront areas. However, it still retains many examples of its past glories as Ulster’s engine room and as a result it has many fine Victorian and Edwardian buildings, making the city well worth some exploring.
A Sustrans cycle route guides us out of the city and up the Northern coastline. Here we alternate our time between exploring the unspoilt dramatic coastline and beautiful Glens whilst experiencing some of the finest hospitality you will find.
Our rest day is in the attractive town of Ballycastle where you can visit Rathlin Island. The famous Giants Causeways and Carrickrede Rope Bridge and the delights of Bushmills Distillery are all part of our safaris.

Glens of Antrim Safari

Photos from our tours

Day to Day Itineray

Saturday: Belfast

We meet up in the centre of Belfast and after an introductory meeting we have dinner together.

Sunday: Belfast to Carnlough     64km

Setting out on a Sustrans Cycle path you cycle out of Belfast along the coast to Carrickfergus and its famous 12th Century castle. You then head inland and up into the mountains before descending to the first of the Antrim Glens with beautiful views of the ocean below. That night you stay in the quiet seaside village of Carnlough.

Monday: Carnlough to Cushendall     56km

In the morning we cycle back up into the hills and see Sperrin mountain. It is here where legend has it that St Patrick spent his youth in captivity as a pig farmer before escaping back to England only to return as a Bishop to convert Ireland to Christianity. We then return to the coast for lunch in a seaside Hotel. The days cycle takes in the beauty of Antrim not only in its coastline but also in its famous and stunning Glens. Slowly but surely we make our way along the coast to the village of Cushendall where we base ourselves for two nights.

Tuesday: Cushendall to Ballycastle    56km

In the morning we explore the pretty and less visited Glenaan more thoroughly and then return to the coast for lunch in Cushendun. In the afternoon comes one of the highlights of the week, a breathtaking cycle along the coast road to Ballycastle passing along green fields dotted with sheep, while you look out over beautiful views of Scotland and the Mull of Kintyre, just across the sea.

Wednesday:   Rest day in Ballycastle

One attractive option on the rest day is to take the ferry to explore nearby Rathlin Island which has one of
the largest bird colonies in the country as well as a small seal colony. It is a wonderful place to spend a
rest day giving you that sense of being away from it all that you can only experience on an island.

Thursday: Ballycastle / Bushmills / Ballycastle     56km

You start with a cycle along beautiful coastline to view the hexagonal basalt rock formations at the Giants Causeway, Northern Ireland’s most famous landmark. When you see this geographical wonder you will understand why is had been awarded World Heritage Site status. Your next stop on
a day of spectacular sights is the Carrik-a-Rede Rope Bridge. This swinging bridge to Carrick-a-Rede
island was originally erected by local fisherman over a 23m-deep and 20m-wide chasm to check their
salmon nets. After taking the “rope-bridge challenge” you head on along the coast to Bushmills where
you have lunch before heading back to Ballycastle for the night .

Friday: Ballycastle to Belfast      40km

CASTLES AND KINGS

8 Day Escorted or Independent tour

This tour takes you through some of the most historic areas in Ireland. From 5000 year old the burial chambers at Newgrange to the mansions built in the Celtic Tiger era.
The route takes you out of Dublin on quiet back roads through the farm lands that feeds the city to the beautiful and historic Boyne Valley. On roads undiscovered by tourists the route heads north through the spectacular Cooley Mountains to the medieval town of Carlingford. Returning to Dublin through the rich pasture lands of Meath and Kildare the route passes the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland at Tara.
There is a mixture of hilly and flat roads on this tour. Leaving and approaching Dublin the roads are largely flat but are hillier further north.

Day to Day Itineray

DAY 1 SATURDAY MALAHIDE DUBLIN
The cycling safari starts with a meeting of the group at 6:30pm in the Bar of the Grand Hotel in Malahide, a suburb on the north side of Dublin which is well served by public transport. After an introductory talk from the guide, an evening meal is organised in the hotel, while your luggage is transported to our nearby guesthouse(s).
If you get there early you can leave your luggage with the hotel reception and explore this pretty seaside village. There are lots of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops to wander around. If you prefer you could walk the short distance from the village to the 12th century Malahide Castle and its grounds which are now a public park.
If you are unexpectedly delayed please ring our office number (01 2600749) where we will have left your guide’s mobile number on our answering machine or, alternatively, call the hotel and leave a message for the guide as to when you expect to arrive.

DAY 2 SUNDAY MALAHIDE TO DROGHEDA 60KM
The tour leaves the picturesque seaside village of Malahide following the shores of the swords estuary past flocks of wild birds into the north Dublin market gardens which provide much of the city’s vegetables. Keeping to quiet undiscovered roads we return to the coast passing the towns of Laytown and Bettystown before reaching the river Boyne where we turn east and follow it upstream to the historic town of Drogheda which suffered the wrath of Oliver Cromwell in 1649. The town is a bustling place with plenty of bars and restaurants.

DAY 3 MONDAY DROGHEDA TO SMARMORE 35KM
Our route is a short one today but you will need to be up early to give some time to view the wonderful historic sites which are within the first 10km. Leaving Drogheda and continuing up stream next to the majestic Boyne the route takes in the site of the Battle of the Boyne which was fought in 1690 between the catholic King James and the protestant king William of Orange. Soon after this you come to the Bru Na Boinne centre and the historical highlight of the tour, the Newgrange Burial Chamber. This UNESCO World Heritage site is more than a passage tomb. At over 5000 years old its design, construction and astrological complexity defies comprehension. Continuing along the Boyne to the village of Slane. We cross to the north side of the river where you can visit the site where St Patrick first used the shamrock to begin to convert the locals to Christianity. Heading into the pasture lands with views of the Cooley mountains appearing and disappearing as we travel through drumlin country to our accommodation where we have the possibility of staying in a 14th century castle.

DAY 4 TUESDAY SMARMORE TO CARLINGFORD 67KM
On pleasant, mostly flat roads through rich dairy lands, our route winds its way north through the busy town of Ardee, visiting sleepy villages. We are now in deepest Ireland. You won’t find too many tourists around here. The route then begins to head towards the coast and we begin to get glimpses of marine views as the terrain changes to slightly more rugged terrain. Skirting around the town of Dundalk we travel on what were known during the “troubles” 20 years ago as unapproved roads as they crossed the border. From here we head on to the Cooley peninsula with its stone walls and forest shaded lanes. We climb to the Long Woman’s grave and descend to the northern side of the peninsula with the spectacular panorama of Carlingford Lough and the Mountains of Mourne sweeping down to the sea (as in the famous song) before us. It is a short ride along the coast to our accommodation in the medieval village of Carlingford.

DAY 5 WEDNESDAY REST DAY IN CARLINGFORD
Carlingford is a wonderful place for a rest day. You will deserve a rest having crossed the ridge the day before. If you are feeling energetic you can hike up on to Slieve Foyle which soars upwards from the village. In the village centre there is an adventure centre which can organise all manner of activities from gentle strolls to high wire, from a quiet paddle in a kayak to abseiling on the mountain. Or you could spend a pleasant day wandering around the villages many historic buildings, punctuating your tour with visits to some of the village’s cafes, pubs and restaurants.

DAY 6 THURSDAY CARLINGFORD TO TRIM 62KM
Our day starts with a short transfer to Carrickmacross. The route takes us out of Carrickmaccross, an old 17th century market town, on verdant stone wall lined lanes to Kingscourt, an unselfconscious midland Irish town. Around here you will see the evidence of Irelands recent boom and crash in the shape of unfinished houses. From here we head south to the heritage town of Kells or Ceannus Mor as it is known in Irish. It was here that the Book of Kells, a lavishly illustrated hand made copy of the scriptures penned by monks circa 800 ad, was found.
We travel on through rich farmland on mainly flat roads through the Irish (Gaelic) speaking region of Racthcarin returning to the banks of the Boyne at our over night stop in the town of Trim. Don’t miss the largely intact 12th century Trim Castle which has featured in several movies.

DAY 7 FRIDAY TRIM TO DUBLIN 65KM
Today’s ride is largely flat through stud farms and fertile fields. We leave the Boyne again take in the Hill of Tara a site of historical, mythical and religious significance where 142 kings are said to have ruled from.
We cross into county Kildare as we approach the valley of the Liffey which runs through the centre of Dublin City. Our final few kilometres are through the Phoenix Park. This is one of the largest city parks in the world. As you ride through you can spot herds of deer within 3km of the city centre. Our accommodation tonight is in the city centre so that you have the opportunity to experience the buzz of the vibrant capital city.

DAY 8  Depart at your leisure after breakfast.
